News posts
Share updates, specials and announcements as news posts, each with its own page, and show the latest on any page.
News posts are short updates: a new service, a seasonal special, an award, a "we're hiring". Write a post once and it shows in every News section on your site, newest first, with a page of its own you can share.
Write a post
- Click Lists in the left menu, then Edit news.
- Click Add post. A new post starts on today's date.
- Fill in:
- Headline: what the post is about, in a few words.
- Date: the day it's dated. Posts are listed newest first by this date.
- Photo: optional. It shows in news lists, at the top of the post's page and when the post is shared.
- Summary: a sentence or two. It's shown in news lists and when someone shares the post.
- Post: the whole post. Leave a blank line between paragraphs. Start a line with
##to make a subheading.
- Click Publish.
Group posts by category
Type a Category, like "Specials" or "Tips". A News section can then show only that category, so your specials page can list just your specials. Use the same spelling each time.
Show news on a page
- In Lists, click Add to a page on the News card, pick the page under Which page?, and click Add and edit. Or add a News section to a page from Pages.
- Set the section:
- Heading and Intro.
- How many: the latest 3, 6, 12 or All.
- Only this category: leave it empty to show every post.
- Layout: Cards, Simple list, Rows or Carousel.
A News section with 3 posts on your home page and one with All on a news page is a common setup.
The post's own page
Each post with a headline and a date gets its own page, like /news/spring-special. News lists link to it. It shows the date, category, headline, summary, photo and the full post, with an All news link back to your news page.
To choose the address yourself, change Web address at the bottom of the post's form. If people have already shared the link, leave it alone: changing it breaks the old link.
Share a post
The post's page has a Share button. On a phone it opens the phone's share menu; on a computer it copies the link. When the link is posted on Facebook or sent in a message, the preview shows the Headline, Summary and Photo, so it's worth filling in all three.
Google is told each post's headline, date and photo, which helps it show your news in search results.
Change or remove a post
Open Lists › Edit news and click the post. Change anything, or click Delete to remove it, then Publish. Posts are never removed by themselves, so take down a special when it ends.
