Show your site in Spanish

Turn on a Spanish version of your whole site, check how it reads, and change any wording you'd say differently.

Your plan includes a Spanish version of your site. You keep writing in English, and every page gets a Spanish copy that's translated for you. Visitors switch with one click, and Google shows the Spanish pages to people searching in Spanish.

Turn on Spanish

  1. Click Languages in the left menu.
  2. Next to Spanish, turn on Show in Spanish.
  3. Click Publish. Your text is translated as it publishes.

Once it's live, every page shows an Español button in the header. Your Spanish pages have their own addresses, with /es/ in front: your Services page at /services is also at /es/services.

To take the Spanish version down, turn Show in Spanish off and publish. Your translations are kept in case you turn it back on.

How translation works

You always write and edit in English. When you publish, any new or changed text is translated automatically. Only the paragraphs you changed are translated again, so a small edit goes live in both languages right away, and the rest of the Spanish stays as it was, including wording you changed yourself.

Some things are never translated, because they must stay exactly as written: your business name, people's names, reviews and quotes, and web addresses.

Words that are part of the design, like "Call", form labels and "All events", already come in Spanish.

The Spanish translation panel shows how much is done, like 120 of 124 pieces of text are in Spanish. Anything not translated yet shows in English on your Spanish pages until you publish.

Check your Spanish before you publish

You don't have to wait for publishing to see the Spanish.

  1. Click Languages in the left menu.
  2. If some text is waiting, click Translate now. Your new and changed text is translated right away.
  3. Click Preview in Spanish to see your pages in Spanish in the preview. You can also switch the preview between EN and ES at the top of the preview at any time.
  4. Change any wording you'd say differently (see the next section), then click Publish.

Publishing still translates anything left, so Translate now is only for reading it first.

Change the Spanish wording

The Spanish wording panel lists every piece of text: the English on the left and the Spanish on the right, grouped by page.

  1. Click a page's name to open its text. Use Search text to find a sentence, or the buttons at the top to show All, Waiting (not translated yet) or Changed by you.
  2. Click into the Spanish and type your own wording. It's saved as you type and marked Your wording.
  3. Changed your mind? Click Use the automatic translation under it.

Your wording is kept even when you edit the English later. Only a paragraph whose English you change is translated again.

Automatic translation is good, but have a fluent speaker read anything important, like your privacy policy.

Messages from Spanish pages

Forms on your Spanish pages work like the English ones. Messages arrive in your Inbox and your email with the questions in English, so you can read them. The visitor's own answers stay in their words. See Forms and your inbox.

More languages

Other languages, like Chinese or Vietnamese, will be the More languages add-on, for any number of extra languages. It isn't available yet. If you need another language now, use Write to our team in Help and tell us which. See Add-ons.

Still stuck?

Try it on the live demo first; nothing you do there is saved. If you’d rather have a person do it, ask for a work request from your dashboard. You’ll get a quote before any work starts.
