Move a business to another account

Hand one business to a new owner, with its website, customers and files, while it stays online and the rest of your account stays as it is.

Move a business when it's going to someone else: a client taking over from their developer, or a developer taking on a client's site. The website stays online the whole time, and its address doesn't change.

If your account holds only this one business, you can also hand it over by inviting the new owner and stepping down.

What goes and what stays

Anyone on your team loses access to the business, unless the new owner invites them back.

Start the move

You need to be an owner of the account.

  1. Go to Team in your dashboard, and under Handing a site to a client, click Move next to the business.
  2. Enter the new owner's email.
  3. If the business takes payments, say whose Stripe account it uses. If it's the business's, it goes with the business. If it's yours, the new owner connects their own.
  4. Click Send it to them.

Nothing changes until they say yes. You have 14 days, and you can Take it back until then.

A business can't move while something is still open, like an AI change, a work request, a publish or a video being made. The page tells you what to finish first.

What the new owner does

They get an email with a link.

  1. They sign in with that email address. If they don't have an account yet, that's fine.
  2. They see what's coming, and choose one of their accounts or a new one.
  3. They pay with their own card: their plan pays for one more site, or they start a plan. Business and add-ons the business has start at their usual prices.

What happens to your plan

Your plan stops paying for the business with no refund, the same as canceling a site. If it was the last website on your plan, the plan ends at its renewal date.

If the person who manages your site doesn't answer

Contact us through Get help. Once we've checked that the business is yours, for example through its domain, we can start the move for you.

Still stuck?

Try it on the live demo first; nothing you do there is saved. If you’d rather have a person do it, ask for a work request from your dashboard. You’ll get a quote before any work starts.
