Sell products with the online store
Add products with prices and photos, show them on your pages, and let customers pay online into your own Stripe account.
The online store lets visitors put your products in a cart and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The money goes straight into your own Stripe account. We take no cut of your sales. The Online store add-on is $10 a month for the site, and Stripe charges its usual card fees. That's all.
It suits shops, bakeries, garden centers, makers and anyone selling a few dozen things, with pickup, flat-rate shipping or both.
To take orders you need three things:
- Products, in Lists › Products.
- The Online store add-on turned on, and your Stripe account connected. See Connect Stripe.
- A published site.
You can add products before the add-on is on. Until then, they show on your site with their prices and no cart.
Add products
- Click Lists in the sidebar, then Products.
- Click Add product.
- Fill in the fields:
- Product name and Price, in dollars, like
24.00. Tax and shipping are added at checkout. - Photo: square photos look best. Add more under More photos.
- Short description: a line under the name in product lists.
- Full description: sizes, materials, care. It's shown on the product's own page.
- Category: optional, like "Seeds". A Products section can show just one category.
- How customers get it: Pickup or shipping (whichever your store offers), Pickup only (for things too big or fragile to ship) or Nothing to deliver (gift cards, classes and services).
- Product name and Price, in dollars, like
- Repeat for each product.
Each product gets its own page on your site, at an address like /shop/seed-collection, with details Google can show in search results.
Sizes, colors and other choices
If customers pick one option, like a size:
- Type what they're choosing in Choices (optional), like "Size".
- Under Choices, add each one, like "Small" and "Large". Give a choice a price if it costs more or less; leave it empty to use the product's price.
- Turn on Sold out for a choice you've run out of.
Sold out or taken down
- Sold out keeps the product on your site, marked sold out, so nobody can add it to a cart.
- Turn off For sale to take a product off your site without deleting it.
Gift cards and tax-free items
For a gift card, set How customers get it to Nothing to deliver, and turn on No sales tax so your tax rate isn't added. The customer gets their receipt by email; send the gift card yourself.
Show products on a page
Products appear wherever you add a Products section.
- From Lists: under Products, click Add to a page, then pick the page.
- From a page: open Pages, choose a page, and on the Content tab click Add a section. Pick Products.
In the section, you can show Only this category, choose How many, and turn Show Add to cart buttons on or off. Products with choices link to their own page instead, where customers pick one.
A page called "Shop" with one Products section showing all your products is a good start.
Store settings
Click Store in the sidebar. The Settings part has:
- Take orders online: turn off to show your products with prices only, with no cart.
- Customers can pick up orders, and Pickup details, like "Pick up at the shop during opening hours." They're shown at checkout and in the customer's order email.
- Ship orders: to addresses in the United States, for one flat Shipping price. Add Free shipping on orders over to make bigger orders ship free.
- Sales tax rate: a percentage, like
7.25, added to products at checkout. Leave it empty if your prices include tax or you don't collect it. Ask your accountant which rate applies. - Ask a question at checkout, and The question: an optional box for the customer, like "Pickup day or gift message". Their answer is in the order.
- Returns and fine print: shown in the cart and on each product's page, like "Plants can't be returned."
Publish after changing products or settings. Checkout always uses the prices on your live site, so a new price takes effect once it's published.
How checkout works
- A visitor adds products to the cart. The cart button at the top of every page shows how many items are in it. The cart is kept in their browser, so it's still there if they come back later.
- They click Check out. A secure Stripe checkout page opens, with your business name.
- They choose pickup or shipping, type their details and pay. If you ask a question at checkout, it's there too.
- They come back to an order-complete page on your site, and get a receipt and a confirmation email.
- You get a "New order" email, and the order is listed on your Store screen. See Store orders.
When shipping is offered, Stripe asks every customer for an address, even those picking up. A line above the address tells them to keep Pickup selected if they're collecting the order.
If something in a cart sold out or its price changed since it was added, checkout stops and asks the customer to check their cart.
On your Spanish pages, the cart, Stripe's checkout page and the order confirmation email are in Spanish.
What it costs
- The Online store add-on: $10 a month for the site.
- Stripe's card fees on each sale, taken before the money reaches your bank. Check Stripe's pricing page for current rates.
- Nothing else. We don't add a fee to your sales.
